What is Synacthen?

Synacthen is a synthetic form of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) that is used in veterinary medicine to diagnose and manage certain conditions related to the adrenal glands. Animals may need Synacthen for various reasons, including: 1. **Diagnosis of Adrenal Insufficiency**: Synacthen stimulation tests are commonly used to diagnose conditions such as Addison's disease in animals. By administering Synacthen and measuring the response of the adrenal glands, veterinarians can determine if an animal's adrenal glands are functioning properly. 2. **Treatment of Adrenal Disorders**: In cases where an animal has been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency or other adrenal disorders, Synacthen may be used as part of the treatment plan. By providing synthetic ACTH, Synacthen can help stimulate the adrenal glands to produce necessary hormones like cortisol. 3. **Monitoring Treatment Response**: Veterinarians may use Synacthen tests to monitor the response of an animal to treatment for adrenal disorders. By measuring the adrenal gland's ability to produce cortisol in response to Synacthen, veterinarians can assess the effectiveness of the treatment. Overall, Synacthen plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing adrenal gland disorders in animals, helping veterinarians provide appropriate care and treatment for their furry patients.

What problems could my pet have with Synacthen?

While Synacthen is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there are some potential issues or side effects that pet owners should be aware of: 1. **Allergic Reactions**: Some animals may be allergic to Synacthen, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If your pet shows any signs of an allergic reaction after receiving Synacthen, contact your veterinarian immediately. 2. **Adverse Effects**: In some cases, pets may experience side effects such as increased thirst, urination, or appetite, as well as gastrointestinal upset (vomiting or diarrhea) after receiving Synacthen. These side effects are usually mild and temporary but should be reported to your veterinarian if they persist or worsen. 3. **Interference with Test Results**: Certain medications or conditions in pets may interfere with the results of Synacthen tests, leading to inaccurate diagnosis or monitoring of adrenal gland disorders. It's important to inform your veterinarian about any medications your pet is taking or any health conditions they have before undergoing Synacthen testing. 4. **Overstimulation of Adrenal Glands**: In rare cases, excessive stimulation of the adrenal glands by Synacthen may lead to an exaggerated response, causing an increase in cortisol levels beyond what is considered normal. This can potentially result in complications such as Cushing's syndrome. If you have any concerns about your pet's health or the use of Synacthen, it's essential to consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice and guidance.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Synacthen?

Administering Synacthen should always be done under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian. Here are some important points to keep in mind when administering Synacthen to your pet: 1. **Dosage**: The dosage of Synacthen will be determined by your veterinarian based on your pet's specific condition and needs. It's crucial to follow the prescribed dosage instructions carefully to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the treatment. 2. **Administration**: Synacthen is typically administered via injection, either intravenously or intramuscularly. It's important to follow proper injection techniques and guidelines provided by your veterinarian to ensure accurate and safe administration. 3. **Monitoring**: Your veterinarian may recommend regular monitoring of your pet's response to Synacthen treatment, especially if it is being used for diagnostic purposes or long-term management of adrenal disorders. Be sure to follow up with your veterinarian as advised to track your pet's progress. 4. **Side Effects**: Keep an eye out for any potential side effects or adverse reactions after administering Synacthen to your pet. If you notice any unusual symptoms or behaviors, contact your veterinarian promptly for further evaluation and guidance. 5. **Storage**: Properly store Synacthen as per the manufacturer's instructions, typically in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets. Ensure that the medication is not expired before use. 6. **Consultation**: If you have any questions or concerns about administering Synacthen to your pet, do not hesitate to consult your veterinarian. They can provide you with detailed instructions, address any doubts you may have, and offer guidance throughout the treatment process. Remember that the health and well-being of your pet are the top priorities, and working closely with your veterinarian will help ensure the safe and effective use of Synacthen for your furry companion.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.
