What is Somac?

Somac is a medication that contains the active ingredient pantoprazole, which belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). PPIs work by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Animals may need Somac for various reasons, such as: 1. **Gastric Ulcers**: Somac can be prescribed to treat gastric ulcers in animals, which are sores or lesions that develop in the stomach lining. Gastric ulcers can be caused by various factors, including stress, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. 2. **Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)**: Animals, especially dogs, can also suffer from GERD, a condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing discomfort and potential damage. Somac can help reduce the acidity in the stomach and alleviate symptoms associated with GERD. 3. **Acid-related Disorders**: Some animals may have conditions that result in excessive acid production in the stomach, leading to issues such as gastritis or acid reflux. Somac can help regulate stomach acid levels and provide relief from associated symptoms. It is important to note that Somac should only be used in animals under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian, as the dosage and duration of treatment may vary depending on the specific condition being treated.

What problems could my pet have with Somac?

While Somac can be beneficial for treating certain conditions in animals, there are potential side effects and risks associated with its use. Some problems that pets may experience with Somac include: 1. **Adverse Reactions**: Like any medication, Somac can cause adverse reactions in some animals. Common side effects may include diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, and changes in behavior. If your pet experiences any concerning symptoms while taking Somac, it is important to contact your veterinarian immediately. 2. **Drug Interactions**: Somac may interact with other medications that your pet is taking, potentially affecting their effectiveness or causing harmful effects. It is crucial to inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and treatments your pet is receiving to avoid any potential interactions. 3. **Long-Term Use Risks**: Prolonged use of Somac in animals may lead to certain risks, such as an increased susceptibility to infections, changes in gut microbiota, or nutrient deficiencies. Your veterinarian will monitor your pet's response to the medication and adjust the treatment plan as needed to minimize these risks. 4. **Allergic Reactions**: Some animals may be allergic to pantoprazole or other ingredients in Somac, leading to allergic reactions such as itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction in your pet, seek immediate veterinary attention. It is essential to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Somac to your pet and to report any concerns or changes in your pet's health during the course of treatment. Regular veterinary check-ups can help monitor your pet's response to the medication and address any issues promptly.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Somac?

When administering Somac to your pet, it is crucial to follow your veterinarian's instructions precisely. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Somac as directed by your veterinarian. Do not adjust the dosage unless instructed to do so by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Somac is typically given orally in the form of tablets. Make sure to give the medication to your pet with or without food as advised by your veterinarian. 3. **Consistency**: Try to administer Somac at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of improvement or adverse reactions while they are on Somac. Report any concerns to your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Duration**: Follow the full course of treatment prescribed by your veterinarian, even if your pet's symptoms improve before the treatment is completed. 6. **Storage**: Store Somac tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. 7. **Missed Dose**: If you forget to give your pet a dose of Somac, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. 8. **Veterinary Guidance**: Always consult your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about administering Somac to your pet. They can provide specific guidance based on your pet's individual needs and condition. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure the safe and effective administration of Somac to your pet.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

Pet Pharmacy Australia applies a shipping discount on orders over $150. A discount of $9.90 is automatically applied during checkout. Additional shipping costs for bulky goods or priority delivery are paid by the customer.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
