What is Ramipril?

Ramipril is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat various heart conditions in animals, particularly dogs and cats. Animals may need Ramipril for conditions such as congestive heart failure, hypertension (high blood pressure), and certain kidney diseases. Ramipril works by dilating blood vessels, reducing the workload on the heart, and improving blood flow to the kidneys. This can help to improve heart function, reduce blood pressure, and protect the kidneys in animals with these conditions. It is important to always follow your veterinarian's instructions when giving Ramipril to your pet, as the dosage and duration of treatment will vary depending on the specific condition being treated. Regular monitoring and follow-up appointments with your veterinarian are also important to ensure the medication is working effectively and to make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan.

What problems could my pet have with Ramipril?

While Ramipril is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there are some potential side effects and risks associated with this medication. Some pets may experience adverse reactions to Ramipril, including: 1. **Hypotension (low blood pressure)**: Ramipril can cause a drop in blood pressure, which may lead to symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, and fainting. Monitoring your pet's blood pressure regularly and adjusting the dosage as needed can help prevent this issue. 2. **Kidney problems**: While Ramipril is often used to protect the kidneys in animals with certain conditions, in some cases, it can cause kidney function to worsen. Monitoring kidney function through blood tests is important when using this medication. 3. **Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels)**: Ramipril can sometimes lead to elevated levels of potassium in the blood, which can be dangerous, especially for pets with kidney disease. Regular monitoring of potassium levels is essential when using this medication. 4. **Gastrointestinal upset**: Some pets may experience digestive issues such as vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite while taking Ramipril. These symptoms should be reported to your veterinarian. 5. **Allergic reactions**: In rare cases, pets may have an allergic reaction to Ramipril, which can manifest as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Seek immediate veterinary attention if you suspect an allergic reaction. It's important to be aware of these potential problems and to closely monitor your pet for any signs of adverse effects while they are taking Ramipril. Always consult your veterinarian if you have any concerns or notice any unusual symptoms in your pet.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Ramipril?

When administering Ramipril to your pet, there are a few important things to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Always follow your veterinarian's prescribed dosage instructions carefully. Do not adjust the dosage on your own unless instructed to do so by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Ramipril is typically given orally in the form of tablets or capsules. Make sure to give the medication with food to help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset. 3. **Consistency**: Try to administer Ramipril at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of side effects or adverse reactions. If you notice anything unusual, contact your veterinarian immediately. 5. **Follow-up**: Regular follow-up appointments with your vet are essential to monitor your pet's response to the medication and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. 6. **Storage**: Store Ramipril in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that your pet receives the benefits of Ramipril while minimizing the risks associated with its use.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

Pet Pharmacy Australia applies a shipping discount on orders over $150. A discount of $9.90 is automatically applied during checkout. Additional shipping costs for bulky goods or priority delivery are paid by the customer.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
