What is Frusemide?

Frusemide, also known as furosemide, is a medication commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat conditions such as congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, and certain types of kidney disease in animals. It belongs to a class of drugs called diuretics, which work by increasing the production of urine to help the body eliminate excess fluid and salt. Animals may need frusemide for various reasons, including: 1. Congestive heart failure: Frusemide can help reduce the accumulation of fluid in the lungs and other tissues, making it easier for the heart to pump blood effectively. 2. Pulmonary edema: This condition involves the accumulation of fluid in the lungs, leading to difficulty breathing. Frusemide can help remove excess fluid from the lungs, improving respiratory function. 3. Kidney disease: Frusemide may be used to manage certain types of kidney disease by promoting the excretion of excess fluid and waste products from the body. Overall, frusemide is a valuable medication in veterinary medicine for managing conditions related to fluid retention and can help improve the quality of life for animals with these health issues.

What problems could my pet have with Frusemide?

While frusemide (furosemide) is a commonly used medication in veterinary medicine to treat various conditions, there are some potential problems or side effects that pet owners should be aware of when their pet is taking this medication. Some of the issues that may arise with the use of frusemide include: 1. Dehydration: Since frusemide works by increasing urine production, there is a risk of dehydration if your pet does not have access to enough water or if they are losing excessive fluids. 2. Electrolyte imbalances: Diuretics like frusemide can cause imbalances in electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, and chloride. Monitoring your pet's electrolyte levels may be necessary while they are on this medication. 3. Low blood pressure: Frusemide can lower blood pressure, which may cause symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, or fainting in some pets. 4. Kidney function: While frusemide is often used to manage certain types of kidney disease, it is important to monitor your pet's kidney function regularly while they are on this medication to ensure it is not causing any harm. 5. Allergic reactions: Some pets may be allergic to frusemide, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately. It is essential to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering frusemide to your pet and to monitor them closely for any potential side effects or problems. If you have any concerns or notice any unusual symptoms in your pet while they are taking frusemide, contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Frusemide?

When administering Frusemide (furosemide) to your pet, it is important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully to ensure the medication is given correctly and safely. Here are some key points to keep in mind when administering Frusemide to your pet: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Frusemide as directed by your veterinarian. Do not give more or less than the recommended amount unless specifically instructed by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Frusemide is typically given orally in the form of tablets or liquid. Make sure to administer the medication exactly as instructed by your veterinarian. You can give the medication with or without food, depending on your vet's recommendation. 3. **Monitoring**: Keep a close eye on your pet while they are taking Frusemide. Monitor their water intake, urine output, and overall condition. Report any changes or concerns to your veterinarian promptly. 4. **Water**: Ensure your pet has access to an adequate amount of fresh water at all times, especially since Frusemide can increase urine production and the risk of dehydration. 5. **Timing**: Administer Frusemide at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 6. **Side Effects**: Be aware of the potential side effects of Frusemide, as mentioned earlier. If you notice any unusual symptoms or reactions in your pet, contact your veterinarian immediately. 7. **Regular Vet Visits**: It is important to schedule regular follow-up appointments with your veterinarian to monitor your pet's response to Frusemide and to assess their overall health and condition. By following these guidelines and staying in close communication with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that your pet receives the necessary care and monitoring while taking Frusemide for their specific medical condition.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

Pet Pharmacy Australia applies a shipping discount on orders over $150. A discount of $9.90 is automatically applied during checkout. Additional shipping costs for bulky goods or priority delivery are paid by the customer.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
