What is Prascend?

Prascend is a medication used to treat Cushing's disease in horses. Cushing's disease, also known as pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), is a common hormonal disorder in older horses. It is characterized by an overproduction of certain hormones, leading to a variety of symptoms such as excessive hair growth, weight loss, muscle wasting, and increased susceptibility to infections. Prascend contains the active ingredient pergolide, which helps to regulate the hormonal imbalances associated with Cushing's disease. By controlling the excessive hormone production, Prascend can help improve the quality of life for horses suffering from this condition. It is important for pet owners to consult with a veterinarian before starting their animal on Prascend or any other medication, as proper diagnosis and dosage are crucial for effective treatment.

What problems could my pet have with Prascend?

While Prascend is an effective medication for treating Cushing's disease in horses, there are some potential side effects and considerations to be aware of: 1. **Loss of Appetite**: Some horses may experience a temporary loss of appetite when starting Prascend. It is important to monitor your horse's eating habits and consult with your veterinarian if you notice any significant changes. 2. **Gastrointestinal Upset**: Prascend can sometimes cause gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea or colic. If your horse experiences persistent digestive problems while on this medication, contact your veterinarian immediately. 3. **Laminitis Risk**: Horses with Cushing's disease are already at an increased risk of developing laminitis, a painful and potentially serious condition affecting the hooves. Prascend treatment should be carefully monitored to minimize the risk of laminitis. 4. **Drug Interactions**: It is important to inform your veterinarian about any other medications or supplements your horse is taking, as there may be potential interactions with Prascend that could affect its effectiveness or safety. 5. **Monitoring and Adjusting Dosage**: Regular monitoring of your horse's condition and hormone levels is essential to ensure that the dosage of Prascend is appropriate. Dosage adjustments may be necessary over time to maintain optimal control of Cushing's disease. Always follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Prascend to your horse, and report any concerns or changes in your horse's health promptly. With proper monitoring and veterinary guidance, Prascend can be a valuable tool in managing Cushing's disease and improving your horse's quality of life.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Prascend?

When administering Prascend to your horse, it is important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Prascend as directed by your veterinarian. Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your vet first. 2. **Administration**: Prascend tablets are typically given orally and can be fed directly to the horse or mixed with a small amount of feed. Make sure your horse consumes the entire dose to ensure they receive the full benefit of the medication. 3. **Consistency**: Try to administer Prascend at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your horse's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep track of your horse's response to the medication and any potential side effects. Report any concerns or changes in your horse's health to your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Storage**: Store Prascend tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Follow the storage instructions provided by the manufacturer to maintain the medication's effectiveness. 6. **Refills**: Make sure you have an adequate supply of Prascend on hand to avoid interruptions in treatment. Check with your veterinarian in advance to ensure timely refills. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that your horse receives the full benefits of Prascend treatment for Cushing's disease.
