What is Oroxine?

Oroxine is a brand name for a medication called levothyroxine sodium, which is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine. Animals, particularly dogs and cats, may need Oroxine if they have been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, leading to a variety of symptoms such as weight gain, lethargy, hair loss, and skin problems. Oroxine is used to supplement the deficient thyroid hormone levels in these animals, helping to regulate their metabolism and improve their overall health and well-being. It is important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Oroxine to your pet.

What problems could my pet have with Oroxine?

While Oroxine (levothyroxine sodium) is generally safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there are some potential issues that pet owners should be aware of: 1. **Overdosing**: Giving your pet too much Oroxine can lead to symptoms of hyperthyroidism, such as increased heart rate, restlessness, excessive thirst, and weight loss. It is crucial to follow the prescribed dosage and not exceed it. 2. **Underdosing**: On the other hand, if your pet does not receive enough Oroxine, their hypothyroidism symptoms may persist or worsen. It is essential to administer the medication as instructed by your veterinarian to ensure optimal thyroid hormone levels. 3. **Drug Interactions**: Oroxine may interact with other medications your pet is taking, potentially affecting their effectiveness or causing adverse reactions. Inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and treatments your pet is receiving to avoid any potential interactions. 4. **Allergic Reactions**: While rare, some pets may be allergic to Oroxine or its ingredients. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing, and seek veterinary attention immediately if you suspect an allergy. 5. **Monitoring**: Regular monitoring of your pet's thyroid hormone levels is essential to ensure that the dosage of Oroxine is appropriate. Your veterinarian may recommend periodic blood tests to assess thyroid function and adjust the medication dosage if needed. If you notice any unusual symptoms or changes in your pet's behavior while they are taking Oroxine, contact your veterinarian promptly for guidance. It is crucial to communicate openly with your vet and follow their recommendations to ensure the safe and effective use of Oroxine for your pet's health.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Oroxine?

When administering Oroxine to your pet, there are some important considerations to keep in mind to ensure the safe and effective use of the medication: 1. **Consistent Administration**: It is crucial to give Oroxine to your pet at the same time each day, as directed by your veterinarian. Consistency in dosing helps maintain stable thyroid hormone levels in your pet's body. 2. **Empty Stomach**: Oroxine is typically recommended to be given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after feeding. This helps optimize the absorption of the medication. 3. **Water Access**: Ensure that your pet has access to fresh water at all times, as adequate hydration is important for the proper functioning of the thyroid gland and the absorption of Oroxine. 4. **Avoid Interactions**: Do not administer Oroxine with other medications or supplements unless specifically instructed by your veterinarian. Some substances can interfere with the absorption or effectiveness of Oroxine. 5. **Missed Doses**: If you accidentally miss a dose of Oroxine, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double dose to make up for a missed one. 6. **Storage**: Store Oroxine in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion. 7. **Monitoring and Follow-Up**: Regularly communicate with your veterinarian about your pet's response to Oroxine and any changes in their condition. Follow-up appointments and monitoring tests may be necessary to adjust the dosage as needed. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can ensure that your pet receives the full benefits of Oroxine therapy for the management of hypothyroidism. If you have any questions or concerns about administering Oroxine, do not hesitate to consult your veterinarian for guidance.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
