What is Levetiracetam?

Levetiracetam is a medication commonly used in veterinary medicine to help manage seizures in animals. Seizures can occur in pets due to various reasons such as epilepsy, brain tumors, infections, or other underlying health conditions. Levetiracetam works by stabilizing abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which helps reduce the frequency and severity of seizures in animals. It is often prescribed by veterinarians to improve the quality of life for pets suffering from seizure disorders.

What problems could my pet have with Levetiracetam?

While Levetiracetam is generally considered safe and well-tolerated in most pets, there are some potential side effects and considerations to be aware of when using this medication: 1. **Side Effects**: Some pets may experience mild side effects such as drowsiness, lack of coordination, or gastrointestinal upset when first starting Levetiracetam. These side effects are usually temporary and may improve as the pet's body adjusts to the medication. 2. **Allergic Reactions**: In rare cases, pets may have an allergic reaction to Levetiracetam, which can manifest as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately. 3. **Drug Interactions**: Levetiracetam may interact with other medications your pet is taking, potentially affecting their effectiveness or causing adverse effects. It's important to inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, or treatments your pet is receiving before starting Levetiracetam. 4. **Liver or Kidney Issues**: Pets with pre-existing liver or kidney problems may require special monitoring while taking Levetiracetam, as the medication is primarily metabolized by the liver and excreted through the kidneys. Your veterinarian may adjust the dosage or recommend additional tests to ensure the medication is safe for your pet. 5. **Behavioral Changes**: Some pets may exhibit changes in behavior or mood while on Levetiracetam, such as increased agitation, restlessness, or anxiety. If you notice any concerning behavioral changes, consult your veterinarian for guidance. It's essential to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Levetiracetam to your pet and to report any unusual symptoms or concerns promptly. Regular monitoring and communication with your veterinarian can help ensure the safe and effective use of this medication for managing your pet's seizures.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Levetiracetam?

When administering Levetiracetam to your pet, it's important to follow your veterinarian's instructions precisely to ensure the medication's effectiveness and your pet's safety. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Levetiracetam as directed by your veterinarian. Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your vet first. 2. **Administration**: Levetiracetam is typically given orally in the form of tablets or liquid suspension. Make sure to administer the medication exactly as instructed, whether with food or on an empty stomach. 3. **Consistency**: Try to give Levetiracetam at the same time(s) each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep track of your pet's response to the medication and any potential side effects. Report any concerns or changes in your pet's condition to your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Storage**: Store Levetiracetam as per the instructions provided, typically in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. 6. **Missed Doses**: If you forget to administer a dose, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue with the regular schedule. Do not double dose. 7. **Regular Vet Visits**: Schedule regular follow-up appointments with your veterinarian to monitor your pet's response to Levetiracetam and adjust the treatment plan if needed. By following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that Levetiracetam is administered safely and effectively to manage your pet's seizures.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

Pet Pharmacy Australia applies a shipping discount on orders over $150. A discount of $9.90 is automatically applied during checkout. Additional shipping costs for bulky goods or priority delivery are paid by the customer.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.

Please refer to our shipping page if you would like the full details regarding our shipping information.
