What is Lanoxin?

Lanoxin is a medication that contains the active ingredient digoxin, which is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat heart conditions in animals. It belongs to a class of drugs known as cardiac glycosides, which help to improve the strength and efficiency of the heart muscle. Animals may need Lanoxin if they are diagnosed with conditions such as congestive heart failure, atrial fibrillation, or certain types of heart rhythm abnormalities. These conditions can lead to symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, difficulty breathing, and exercise intolerance. Lanoxin works by helping the heart pump more effectively, which can improve blood flow and alleviate these symptoms. It is important to note that Lanoxin should only be used under the guidance and supervision of a veterinarian, as dosing and monitoring are crucial to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the medication for each individual animal.

What problems could my pet have with Lanoxin?

While Lanoxin can be an effective medication for treating heart conditions in animals, there are potential risks and side effects that pet owners should be aware of. Some problems that pets may experience with Lanoxin include: 1. **Toxicity**: Lanoxin has a narrow therapeutic range, meaning that the difference between a safe and toxic dose is small. Pets can easily overdose on Lanoxin, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness, and abnormal heart rhythms. It is crucial to follow the veterinarian's dosing instructions carefully to avoid toxicity. 2. **Drug Interactions**: Lanoxin can interact with other medications, potentially leading to adverse effects. It is important to inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and treatments your pet is receiving to avoid harmful interactions. 3. **Electrolyte Imbalance**: Lanoxin can affect the levels of electrolytes in the body, such as potassium and magnesium. Imbalances in these electrolytes can impact the heart's function and lead to complications. Regular monitoring of electrolyte levels may be necessary while your pet is on Lanoxin. 4. **Allergic Reactions**: Some pets may be allergic to Lanoxin, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately. 5. **Kidney or Liver Disease**: Pets with pre-existing kidney or liver disease may be more susceptible to the side effects of Lanoxin. Your veterinarian will need to carefully assess the risks and benefits of using Lanoxin in these cases. It is essential to closely monitor your pet for any changes in behavior, appetite, or overall health while they are taking Lanoxin. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian promptly.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Lanoxin?

Administering Lanoxin to your pet requires careful attention to detail to ensure the medication's safety and effectiveness. Here are some important points to keep in mind when administering Lanoxin: 1. **Dosage**: Always follow your veterinarian's prescribed dosage instructions for Lanoxin. Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your vet, as giving too much or too little of the medication can be harmful to your pet. 2. **Administration**: Lanoxin is typically given orally in the form of tablets or liquid. Make sure to administer the medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. You can give the medication with or without food, but it's essential to be consistent with the administration method. 3. **Monitoring**: Regular monitoring of your pet's condition is crucial while they are on Lanoxin. Your veterinarian may recommend periodic check-ups, blood tests, or electrocardiograms to assess the medication's effectiveness and detect any potential side effects early. 4. **Consistency**: Try to administer Lanoxin at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. This can help optimize its therapeutic effects and minimize the risk of fluctuations in blood levels. 5. **Missed Doses**: If you accidentally miss a dose of Lanoxin, give it as soon as you remember. However, if it is close to the time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses to make up for a missed one. 6. **Storage**: Store Lanoxin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion. 7. **Disposal**: Dispose of any unused or expired Lanoxin properly according to local regulations or your veterinarian's instructions. Do not flush medications down the toilet unless specifically instructed to do so. Remember that proper administration and monitoring are essential for the safe and effective use of Lanoxin in your pet. If you have any questions or concerns about administering the medication, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian for guidance.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.
