What is Creon?

Creon is a pancreatic enzyme supplement that is commonly used in veterinary medicine to aid in the digestion of food in animals with pancreatic insufficiency. Pancreatic insufficiency occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough digestive enzymes, leading to poor digestion and absorption of nutrients from food. Animals with conditions such as exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) or chronic pancreatitis may require Creon to help them properly digest their food and maintain their overall health. Creon supplements provide the necessary enzymes to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the diet, allowing the animal to better absorb essential nutrients and maintain a healthy weight.

What problems could my pet have with Creon?

While Creon is generally safe and effective when used as directed, there are some potential issues that pets may experience when taking this medication. Some common problems that pets may have with Creon include: 1. **Allergic reactions**: Some pets may be allergic to the ingredients in Creon, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If your pet shows any signs of an allergic reaction, stop giving Creon and contact your veterinarian immediately. 2. **Gastrointestinal upset**: In some cases, pets may experience gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain when taking Creon. If your pet has persistent or severe gastrointestinal symptoms, consult your veterinarian for guidance. 3. **Overdose**: Giving your pet too much Creon can lead to an overdose, which may cause symptoms such as excessive gas, bloating, or stomach discomfort. It's important to follow your veterinarian's dosage instructions carefully to avoid overdosing your pet. 4. **Interactions with other medications**: Creon may interact with certain medications, potentially affecting their effectiveness or causing adverse effects. Make sure to inform your veterinarian about all medications and supplements your pet is taking before starting Creon. 5. **Pancreatitis exacerbation**: While Creon is commonly used to manage pancreatitis, in some cases, it may exacerbate the condition or lead to complications. Monitor your pet closely for any signs of worsening pancreatitis symptoms, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or decreased appetite. If you notice any concerning symptoms or changes in your pet's health while they are taking Creon, contact your veterinarian for further evaluation and guidance. It's essential to work closely with your veterinarian to ensure that Creon is safe and beneficial for your pet's specific health needs.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Creon?

When administering Creon to your pet, it's important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully to ensure the medication is given correctly and effectively. Here are some key points to keep in mind when administering Creon: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Creon as directed by your veterinarian. Do not exceed the recommended dose unless specifically instructed by your vet. 2. **Timing**: Give Creon with each meal or as directed by your veterinarian. The enzymes in Creon work best when mixed with food, so it's typically given just before or during mealtime. 3. **Administration**: You can either sprinkle the contents of the Creon capsule onto your pet's food or mix it with a small amount of food before feeding. Make sure your pet consumes the entire meal to ensure they receive the full benefit of the enzymes. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep an eye on your pet's response to Creon, including their digestion, appetite, and overall well-being. If you notice any concerning symptoms or changes in behavior, contact your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Storage**: Store Creon in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight. Follow the storage instructions provided on the medication packaging to maintain its effectiveness. 6. **Consistency**: Try to administer Creon consistently with each meal to help maintain stable digestion and nutrient absorption for your pet. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that Creon is administered safely and effectively to support your pet's digestive health. If you have any questions or concerns about giving Creon to your pet, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian for guidance.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
