What is Cardizem?

Cardizem is a medication that contains the active ingredient diltiazem, which belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. In veterinary medicine, Cardizem is commonly used to treat certain heart conditions in animals, such as hypertension (high blood pressure), certain types of arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), and certain heart diseases. Animals may need Cardizem if they have been diagnosed with a heart condition that requires the regulation of their heart rate or blood pressure. Your veterinarian may prescribe Cardizem to help manage your pet's heart condition and improve their overall quality of life. It is important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Cardizem to your pet to ensure its effectiveness and safety.

What problems could my pet have with Cardizem?

While Cardizem can be an effective medication for treating certain heart conditions in animals, there are potential side effects and risks associated with its use. Some common problems that pets may experience with Cardizem include: 1. **Hypotension (low blood pressure)**: Cardizem can cause a drop in blood pressure, which may lead to symptoms such as weakness, lethargy, and fainting in some pets. 2. **Bradycardia (slow heart rate)**: Cardizem can slow down the heart rate, which may cause symptoms like weakness, fatigue, and exercise intolerance in pets. 3. **Gastrointestinal upset**: Some pets may experience digestive issues such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite while taking Cardizem. 4. **Allergic reactions**: In rare cases, pets may develop an allergic reaction to Cardizem, which can manifest as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. 5. **Drug interactions**: Cardizem may interact with other medications that your pet is taking, leading to potential complications or reduced effectiveness of either drug. It is important to monitor your pet closely while they are taking Cardizem and report any concerning symptoms to your veterinarian promptly. Your veterinarian can provide guidance on how to manage any side effects and adjust the treatment plan if needed.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Cardizem?

When administering Cardizem to your pet, it is crucial to follow your veterinarian's instructions precisely. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Cardizem as directed by your veterinarian. Do not give more or less than the recommended amount unless specifically instructed to do so. 2. **Administration**: Cardizem is typically given orally in the form of tablets or capsules. Make sure to give the medication with food unless otherwise advised by your veterinarian. 3. **Consistency**: Try to administer Cardizem at the same time(s) each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of side effects or adverse reactions while they are taking Cardizem. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any concerning symptoms. 5. **Compliance**: It is essential to complete the full course of treatment with Cardizem as prescribed by your veterinarian, even if your pet's symptoms improve. Stopping the medication prematurely can lead to a recurrence of the underlying heart condition. 6. **Storage**: Store Cardizem securely out of reach of pets and children, and follow any specific storage instructions provided by the manufacturer. 7. **Regular Check-ups**: Your veterinarian may recommend periodic check-ups to monitor your pet's response to Cardizem and adjust the treatment plan if necessary. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure the safe and effective administration of Cardizem to your pet.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

Only once a conformant electronic prescription system is approved by NSW Health, will we be able to end the need for paper prescriptions.

How Much Does Shipping Cost?

Small orders (less than 500g) cost $9.90 to be delivered anywhere in Australia. For larger orders, shipping costs are calculated on distance and weight (leaving Sydney) and an exact price can be obtained in the shopping cart prior to checkout.

Pet Pharmacy Australia applies a shipping discount on orders over $150. A discount of $9.90 is automatically applied during checkout. Additional shipping costs for bulky goods or priority delivery are paid by the customer.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
