Precautions | This product should not be used in dogs and bitches intended for breeding purposes; in pregnant and lactating bitches; or in conjunction with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in dogs with renal insufficiency. Kidney function and serum potassium levels should be evaluated before initiating combined treatment with spironolactone and ACE inhibitors. Unlike in humans, an increased incidence of hyperkalaemia was not observed in clinical trials performed in dogs with this combination. However, in dogs with renal impairment, regular monitoring of renal function and serum potassium levels is recommended, as there may be an increased risk of hyperkalaemia.Dogs treated concomitantly with spironolactone and NSAIDs should be appropriately hydrated. Monitoring of their renal function and plasma potassium levels is recommended before initiation and during treatment with combined therapy. As spironolactone undergoes extensive hepatic biotransformation, care should be taken when using the product to treat dogs with hepatic dysfunction. As spironolactone has an antiandrogenic effect, it is not recommended to administer the product to growing dogs.Harmful if swallowed. Will irritate the eyes and skin. Repeated exposure may cause allergic disorders. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wash hands after use.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Cardalis is a medication used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of congestive heart failure in dogs. It is a combination product containing two active ingredients, benazepril and spironolactone. Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that helps to dilate blood vessels and reduce the workload on the heart, while spironolactone is a diuretic that helps to reduce fluid retention in the body. Animals may need Cardalis if they have been diagnosed with congestive heart failure, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood effectively, leading to a buildup of fluid in the lungs and other tissues. Cardalis can help improve the symptoms of congestive heart failure, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and exercise intolerance, and can help improve the quality of life for dogs with this condition. It is important to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when using Cardalis to ensure the best outcomes for your pet.
While Cardalis is generally well-tolerated by most dogs, there are some potential side effects and considerations to be aware of when using this medication: 1. **Dehydration**: Since spironolactone is a diuretic, it can lead to increased urination and potential dehydration in some dogs. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times. 2. **Electrolyte Imbalance**: Diuretics like spironolactone can also affect the balance of electrolytes in the body, such as potassium levels. Your veterinarian may monitor these levels periodically during treatment. 3. **Hypotension**: Benazepril, as an ACE inhibitor, can cause a drop in blood pressure. This can lead to symptoms like weakness, lethargy, or fainting. Monitoring your pet's blood pressure may be necessary. 4. **Kidney Function**: Both benazepril and spironolactone can affect kidney function, so it's important to monitor kidney health through blood tests while your pet is on Cardalis. 5. **Allergic Reactions**: While rare, some pets may experience allergic reactions to Cardalis. Watch for signs such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing, and seek veterinary attention immediately if you notice any of these symptoms. Always consult with your veterinarian if you notice any concerning symptoms or changes in your pet's health while they are taking Cardalis. It's essential to follow your vet's instructions carefully and attend regular check-ups to ensure the medication is working effectively and safely for your pet.
Administering Cardalis to your pet correctly is crucial to ensure the medication's effectiveness and your pet's safety. Here are some important points to keep in mind when administering Cardalis: 1. **Dosage**: Always follow your veterinarian's prescribed dosage instructions for Cardalis. Do not adjust the dosage unless specifically instructed by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Cardalis is typically given orally in the form of tablets. Make sure to administer the medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. You can give the tablet directly to your pet or hide it in a small amount of food to make it easier for them to swallow. 3. **Consistency**: Try to administer Cardalis at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring**: Keep track of when you administer each dose of Cardalis to ensure your pet receives the medication as prescribed. If you miss a dose, contact your veterinarian for guidance on how to proceed. 5. **Food**: Some medications may need to be given with food to minimize stomach upset. Follow your vet's instructions on whether Cardalis should be administered with or without food. 6. **Storage**: Store Cardalis tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. Follow any specific storage instructions provided by the manufacturer. 7. **Regular Vet Visits**: It's important to schedule regular check-ups with your veterinarian while your pet is on Cardalis. These visits allow your vet to monitor your pet's response to the medication, adjust the dosage if needed, and address any concerns or side effects. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can ensure that your pet receives the full benefits of Cardalis treatment while minimizing the risk of potential side effects. If you have any questions or concerns about administering Cardalis, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian for guidance.
