What is Carafate?

Carafate is a medication that contains sucralfate, which is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat gastrointestinal issues in animals. It works by forming a protective coating over ulcers or irritated areas in the stomach and intestines, helping to promote healing and reduce inflammation. Animals may need Carafate for various reasons, such as: 1. Gastric ulcers: Carafate can help in the treatment of gastric ulcers in animals, which can be caused by stress, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. 2. Gastrointestinal inflammation: It can be used to alleviate inflammation in the stomach and intestines caused by conditions like gastritis or inflammatory bowel disease. 3. Esophagitis: Carafate can also be beneficial in managing esophagitis, which is inflammation of the esophagus often seen in animals with acid reflux or other digestive issues. Overall, Carafate can be a valuable medication for animals experiencing gastrointestinal problems, helping to protect and heal the delicate lining of the digestive tract.

What problems could my pet have with Carafate?

While Carafate is generally considered safe and effective for treating gastrointestinal issues in animals, there are some potential problems or side effects that pet owners should be aware of: 1. Constipation: One common side effect of Carafate in animals is constipation. This can occur due to the medication's mechanism of forming a protective coating in the digestive tract, which may slow down bowel movements. 2. Aluminum toxicity: Carafate contains aluminum, which can potentially lead to aluminum toxicity in some animals, especially if they have impaired kidney function. It is important to use Carafate cautiously in pets with kidney disease or dysfunction. 3. Interactions with other medications: Carafate may interact with certain medications, such as antibiotics or antacids, affecting their absorption or effectiveness. It is essential to inform your veterinarian about all the medications your pet is taking before starting Carafate. 4. Allergic reactions: Some animals may be allergic to sucralfate, the active ingredient in Carafate, leading to symptoms like itching, hives, or difficulty breathing. If your pet shows any signs of an allergic reaction, seek veterinary attention immediately. 5. Overdose: While rare, overdose of Carafate can lead to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. It is crucial to follow your veterinarian's dosage instructions carefully and not exceed the prescribed amount. If you notice any concerning symptoms or changes in your pet's health while using Carafate, contact your veterinarian promptly for further guidance and evaluation.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Carafate?

When administering Carafate to your pet, it's essential to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully to ensure the medication is given correctly and effectively. Here are some important points to keep in mind when administering Carafate: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Carafate as directed by your veterinarian. Do not exceed the recommended amount unless specifically instructed to do so by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Carafate is typically given orally in the form of a tablet or suspension. Make sure to administer the medication exactly as instructed by your vet. If your pet has difficulty taking tablets, you can ask your veterinarian if the medication can be compounded into a more palatable form. 3. **Timing**: Carafate is usually given on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after feeding. This helps the medication form a protective coating in the digestive tract without interference from food. 4. **Consistency**: Try to administer Carafate at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 5. **Monitoring**: Keep an eye on your pet for any signs of improvement or worsening of symptoms while on Carafate. If you notice any concerning changes, contact your veterinarian for further guidance. 6. **Interaction with other medications**: Inform your veterinarian about all the medications, supplements, or treatments your pet is currently receiving. Some medications may interact with Carafate, affecting their absorption or effectiveness. 7. **Storage**: Store Carafate as per the manufacturer's instructions, typically at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication out of reach of pets and children. 8. **Regular check-ups**: Your veterinarian may recommend periodic check-ups to monitor your pet's response to Carafate and adjust the treatment plan if needed. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that Carafate is administered safely and effectively to your pet to manage their gastrointestinal issues.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.
