What is Benacillin?

Benacillin is a brand name for the antibiotic drug ampicillin. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat bacterial infections in animals. Animals may need Benacillin if they have been diagnosed with a bacterial infection, such as respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, skin infections, or gastrointestinal infections. Benacillin works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, helping the animal's immune system to fight off the infection. It is important to always follow the veterinarian's instructions when using Benacillin to ensure the proper dosage and duration of treatment for the best results.

What problems could my pet have with Benacillin?

While Benacillin (ampicillin) is generally safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there are some potential issues that could arise when administering this antibiotic to your pet. Some common problems that may occur include: 1. Allergic reactions: Some animals may be allergic to ampicillin, which can lead to symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately. 2. Gastrointestinal upset: Benacillin can sometimes cause gastrointestinal issues in pets, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. If your pet experiences persistent or severe gastrointestinal symptoms, consult your veterinarian. 3. Resistance: Overuse or misuse of antibiotics like Benacillin can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. This means that the medication may become less effective over time, making it harder to treat infections in the future. 4. Secondary infections: In some cases, the use of antibiotics like Benacillin can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the body, leading to secondary infections such as yeast infections or gastrointestinal issues. Your veterinarian can provide guidance on how to manage these complications if they occur. It's important to always follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when using Benacillin and to monitor your pet for any potential side effects or complications. If you have any concerns about your pet's response to the medication, don't hesitate to reach out to your veterinarian for guidance.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Benacillin?

When administering Benacillin (ampicillin) to your pet, there are some important considerations to keep in mind to ensure the safe and effective use of the medication: 1. **Dosage and Administration**: Always follow your veterinarian's prescribed dosage instructions carefully. Administer the medication exactly as directed, including the frequency and duration of treatment. Do not adjust the dosage without consulting your veterinarian. 2. **Timing**: It's important to give Benacillin at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels of the antibiotic in your pet's system. This helps maximize the effectiveness of the treatment. 3. **Food**: Some antibiotics, including Benacillin, may be more effective when given on an empty stomach. However, if your pet experiences gastrointestinal upset, you can administer the medication with a small amount of food to help reduce stomach irritation. 4. **Complete the Course**: Even if your pet's symptoms improve before the prescribed treatment period is over, it's crucial to complete the full course of medication as directed by your veterinarian. Stopping the treatment prematurely can lead to incomplete eradication of the infection and potential recurrence. 5. **Storage**: Store Benacillin in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children and pets. Follow any specific storage instructions provided by the manufacturer. 6. **Monitoring**: Keep a close eye on your pet's response to the medication. Monitor for any signs of improvement in the infection as well as any potential side effects or adverse reactions. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian promptly. 7. **Follow-up**: After completing the prescribed course of Benacillin, your veterinarian may recommend follow-up appointments to assess your pet's response to the treatment and ensure that the infection has been successfully treated. By following these guidelines and working closely with your veterinarian, you can help ensure that Benacillin is administered safely and effectively to your pet to combat bacterial infections.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.
