What is Arava?

Arava is a medication that is commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat autoimmune diseases in animals, particularly dogs. It contains the active ingredient leflunomide, which works by suppressing the immune system to reduce inflammation and control the symptoms of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, immune-mediated polyarthritis, and other autoimmune disorders. Animals may need Arava if they are suffering from autoimmune diseases that cause pain, inflammation, and discomfort. These conditions can affect their quality of life and mobility, making it important to manage their symptoms effectively. Arava can help alleviate these symptoms and improve the overall well-being of animals with autoimmune diseases.

What problems could my pet have with Arava?

While Arava can be an effective medication for treating autoimmune diseases in animals, there are potential side effects and risks associated with its use. Some common problems that pets may experience with Arava include: 1. Gastrointestinal issues: Pets may experience vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite while taking Arava. It is important to monitor your pet for any signs of gastrointestinal upset and consult your veterinarian if these symptoms persist. 2. Liver toxicity: Arava can affect liver function in some animals, leading to liver damage or failure. Regular monitoring of liver enzymes through blood tests is typically recommended while your pet is on this medication. 3. Bone marrow suppression: Arava can suppress the production of blood cells in the bone marrow, which may result in anemia, low white blood cell count, or low platelet count. Your veterinarian may recommend regular blood tests to monitor your pet's blood cell counts. 4. Allergic reactions: Some pets may be allergic to Arava, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, seek immediate veterinary attention. 5. Drug interactions: Arava may interact with other medications your pet is taking, potentially leading to adverse effects. It is important to inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and treatments your pet is receiving before starting Arava. It is crucial to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully when administering Arava to your pet and to report any concerning symptoms or changes in your pet's health promptly. Regular monitoring and communication with your veterinarian can help minimize the risks associated with this medication and ensure the best possible outcome for your pet.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Arava?

When administering Arava to your pet, it is essential to follow your veterinarian's instructions precisely. Here are some key points to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage**: Administer the prescribed dosage of Arava as directed by your veterinarian. Do not give more or less than the recommended amount unless instructed to do so by your vet. 2. **Administration**: Arava is typically given orally in the form of tablets. Make sure to give the medication with food to help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset. 3. **Monitoring**: Your veterinarian may recommend regular check-ups and blood tests to monitor your pet's response to Arava and assess any potential side effects. Follow up with your vet as advised. 4. **Side Effects**: Be vigilant for any signs of gastrointestinal issues, liver problems, bone marrow suppression, allergic reactions, or other adverse effects mentioned earlier. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Drug Interactions**: Inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, and treatments your pet is currently receiving to avoid any potential drug interactions with Arava. 6. **Storage**: Store Arava in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. 7. **Compliance**: Ensure that you administer Arava consistently and as prescribed. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting your veterinarian. By following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with your veterinarian, you can help ensure the safe and effective use of Arava for your pet's autoimmune condition.
