What is Allopurinol?

Allopurinol is a medication commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat conditions related to high levels of uric acid in the body. It works by reducing the production of uric acid, which can be beneficial for animals with certain health issues such as kidney stones, gout, or hyperuricemia. Animals may need Allopurinol if they have been diagnosed with conditions such as hyperuricemia, which is an elevated level of uric acid in the blood. This can lead to the formation of kidney stones or cause gout, a painful inflammatory condition that affects the joints. Allopurinol can help manage these conditions by lowering uric acid levels and preventing the formation of crystals that can cause discomfort and health complications in animals. It is important to always follow your veterinarian's recommendations and dosage instructions when using Allopurinol for your pet, as improper use can lead to adverse effects.

What problems could my pet have with Allopurinol?

While Allopurinol is generally considered safe and effective when used as directed by a veterinarian, there are some potential problems or side effects that your pet may experience. These can include: 1. **Allergic reactions:** Some animals may be allergic to Allopurinol, leading to symptoms such as itching, hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, contact your veterinarian immediately. 2. **Gastrointestinal upset:** Common side effects of Allopurinol can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. These symptoms may be mild and temporary, but if they persist or worsen, consult your veterinarian. 3. **Liver or kidney issues:** In rare cases, Allopurinol can cause liver or kidney problems in some animals. Monitoring your pet's liver and kidney function through blood tests may be recommended while using this medication. 4. **Bone marrow suppression:** Allopurinol can affect the production of blood cells in the bone marrow, leading to conditions such as anemia or low platelet counts. Regular monitoring of blood cell counts may be necessary in some cases. 5. **Drug interactions:** Allopurinol may interact with other medications your pet is taking, potentially affecting their effectiveness or causing adverse reactions. Always inform your veterinarian about all medications, supplements, or treatments your pet is receiving. It's essential to discuss any concerns or potential side effects with your veterinarian before starting Allopurinol treatment for your pet. Monitoring your pet's response to the medication and reporting any unusual symptoms promptly can help ensure their safety and well-being.

Is there anything I need to know about administering Allopurinol?

When administering Allopurinol to your pet, it is crucial to follow your veterinarian's instructions carefully. Here are some additional tips to keep in mind: 1. **Dosage:** Administer the prescribed dosage of Allopurinol as directed by your veterinarian. Do not increase, decrease, or stop the medication without consulting your vet. 2. **Administration:** Allopurinol is typically given orally in the form of tablets or capsules. Make sure to give the medication with food to help reduce the risk of gastrointestinal upset. 3. **Consistency:** Try to give Allopurinol at the same time each day to maintain a consistent level of the medication in your pet's system. 4. **Monitoring:** Keep track of your pet's response to the medication and any potential side effects. Report any concerns or changes in your pet's health to your veterinarian promptly. 5. **Duration:** Follow the full course of treatment prescribed by your vet, even if your pet's symptoms improve. Stopping the medication prematurely can lead to a recurrence of the underlying condition. 6. **Storage:** Store Allopurinol in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of pets and children. 7. **Regular check-ups:** Your veterinarian may recommend periodic check-ups to monitor your pet's response to Allopurinol and assess any potential side effects or complications. By following these guidelines and maintaining open communication with your veterinarian, you can help ensure the safe and effective use of Allopurinol for your pet's health needs.

Important information to know when ordering prescription medicines

A prescription is required from your veterinarian before we can supply this product.

If this is a new prescription, to enable immediate dispensing, please ask the vet to send a copy of the prescription to us prior to mailing it.

If the original prescription is in your possession, then please upload this to your pet's profile in VetRx prior to mailing it.

Please note that we must receive either a copy of the prescription from the vet, or the original prescription before we can dispatch your order. This does unfortunately add to the order processing time, however this is a requirement placed upon all pharmacies by the Health Regulators.

The weight limit for Australia Post is 22kg and orders that weigh more than this cannot be shipped. We recommend placing multiple smaller orders to work around this problem.
